Acrobatic Gymnastics, previously entitled Sports Acrobatics and nicknamed “Acro” or “Sports Acro,” is a competitive gymnastic discipline where partnerships of gymnasts work together and perform routines consisting of acrobatic moves, dance and tumbling.
What’s the difference between AcroYoga and Acrobatic Gymnastics?
The most obvious visual difference is that AcroYoga is practiced with the base lying on the floor, legs extended, whereas Acrobatic Gymnastics is practiced with both partners standing up. Sports Acro often has more of a visual pop and can be more riveting and engaging for an audience to watch. Tricks are often far more technically advanced than L-based acrobatics or AcroYoga, though not always. It’s a thrilling and exhilarating practice for all those involved that requires an even greater degree of focus, trust, strength, aerial awareness. One must also be willing to humbly refine the same skills over and over again. At this level, the tiniest adjustment or piece of wisdom can create massive changes in your practice.
As a hybrid or switch, Tari is unusual in that he can both base and fly almost all tricks in his repertoire giving you more understanding of each trick when you stunt with him.
The practice of Acrobatics is exhilarating. There is no end to the amount of growth and fun you can have. Solid technique – the ability to consistently and repeatedly perform stunts and tricks with alignment, focus and balance is crucial.
Here, trust, connection and grip are paramount.
In AcroYoga having a same size partner or slight size differences aren’t as crucial as they are with standing acro. It is not so much that you need to be a large person to base or small person to fly, but having a large size difference between the parter you choose to work with is extremely helpful and almost necessary when first beginning.
One of the signature stunts of an Acrobatic Gymnast is the standing low hand to hand, or a handstand in someone’s hands as seen below in many photos. This to many who first see it is the crown jewel of acrobatics but is in fact the entry level trick into work that defies the imagination such as the image to the left.
